JPEGThirty years on, still the default for photographs. Its lossy compression discards detail the eye barely notices, and quality 75–85 is the sweet spot where files shrink dramatically without visible damage. No transparency support.

- PPM is lossless and JPG is lossy. This direction discards some information in the encode step. In practice, many files look identical at default settings, but this is a one-way loss. Keep the PPM source if you might need a perfect copy later.
